Unbelievably, when I think the Bush administration has sunk as low as possible, I see this story about the CDC censuring scientific studies because they present FACTS that the yahoos in the executive branch don't like to acknowledge. Heaven forbid we teach women throughout the world to take care of themselves and control their own reproductive cycle.
The outrageous fallacy that abstaining from sex before marriage is enough to prevent STDs including AIDS is disproven again and again even in our own supposedly "civilized" country. Just ask any prominent right-wing Christian preacher's wife. The only person you can be sure of in a sexual relationship is yourself. Even a long-standing marriage isn't a guarantee. And in developing (I just love that patronizing term) countries women are even more at risk.
Add to that the findings of the most recent study squashed by the CDC. The study that shows that illegal dangerous abortions are performed daily throughout the world resulting in the death of half a million women. The number of abortions is a constant. It does not go up or down with the legality or availability of alternatives. It is a strong argument for legalizing safe affordable abortions worldwide. Saving 500,000 lives. Living, breathing, women.
But the blinders worn by so-called "pro life" people prevent them from seeing the life of the women. They only care about the potential life (and that only until birth). Nevermind about the potential of the woman who dies or is permanantly maimed. Her life is forfeit for the as-yet-to-exist life of the fertilized egg in her abdomen. So, as such, the supress the study. No need to muddy the waters with facts or anything.
