Regional tastes

We had chili for dinner the other night and served it up with oyster crackers and cheese. Today I was contemplating why. Oyster crackers, you would think, are something you would eat with-- I don't know-- oysters. And according to the history of oyster crackers, that's exactly what they were originally for.
However, Ohio chili-eaters have co-opted not only oyster crackers, but spaghetti. After all, it's not really chili unless it's a five-way.
Five Way is kidney beans or chili beans, heated separately, placed on the plate then topped with spaghetti, chili, onions and grated cheese.

In Summer of '42, Hermie cracks open a whole bowl of oyster crackers but doesn't find any pearls.
