Tap on a hot tin wire

I have to wonder what exactly prevented the administration from going to the FISA court in order to wiretap the terrorists they knew to be in this country prior to 9-11? Could it have been that they didn't know where they were? After all, they did have the authority to tap into electronic communications prior to 2001. In fact they've had that authority since 1978.
The administration might have saved 3000 lives on 9-11, if they had wiretapped the terrorists they knew to be in this country. And they could have done so all within the bounds of the law: with a warrant.
But when the NSA did intercept messages (within the law), it didn't bother to translate them until after the towers fell. So perhaps Mr. Bush, Mr Cheney and Mr. Hayden shouldn't be so quick to cite 9-11 as a prime example of what wiretapping could prevent.
All of this "if only" media blitz attempting to justify the warrantless wiretaps has, as John Kerry said, "failed to explain why [Bush] considers himself above the law."

The Bush regime scares the living hell out of me.

Call me paranoid, but let me make this prediction: In 2008, Bush, who somehow has avoided getting thrown out of office, says that since we're still at war, it will be too dangerous for the country to leave office, and he will attempt to stay in office.
