Etiquette

What is the appropriate response to someone who actually begins to make horking noises at your dinner table? In the middle of our Christmas dinner, one of my 'guests' (and I use that term loosely) actually began to hocker! He stopped before he produced a great phlegm glob -thank god for that- but...
Well, what exactly is the etiquette regarding a response to such repulsiveness?

I would probably find it offensive enough to enquire, in my politest voice, "Are you well? I have some hairball medicine in the linen cupboard if you'd like."

I'm ashamed to say that all I did was avert my eyes and pretend I didn't hear it. Even though it continued the rest of the night.

I would say, with a laughing tone: "Please Dude! We're trying to eat here!" Most messages are taken better when they're said with humour.
