Apparently, the U.S. military in Iraq now feels compelled to point out that they "would have done things [Hussein's execution] differently."
Which begs the question: differently, how? Offer him some bacon and chitlins for his final meal? Given him a lethal injection instead of the rope? Allowed him to phone a friend?
It's not like we didn't know what would happen shortly after we handed him over to the Iraqi guards at 5:30 that morning. Now, all of a sudden, we're shocked.
You know damn well they had to have video proof of his death or rumors would spread for ages about Saddam's imminent return. Anyone with half a brain could have figured this out; yet now we pretend concern and recommend the majority 'reach out' to the Sunni muslims and make nice. NOW we recommend this?!? We didn't think this appropriate advice, oh, say a year ago? Two years ago?
This is so blatantly CYA that it may actually backfire. We just really need to go home. I don't think there's much more we can do to screw things up, and we certainly proved that we're not making things better.
