So the big news this weekend was the outing of Albus Dumbledore.
It seems to have very little relevance to the story itself, while at the same time horrifying the already horrified bigots who think that reading about a school for witches and wizards is the devil's work.
I was particularly amused by the online outrage of people sputtering that the books are for kids and now with a gay wizard they are ruined. What utter crap.
First of all, these books are not suitable for small children due to the violence and complexity of the story. But I suppose that is not truly an argument since, in this day and age, parents will take 5-year-olds to see films that include explosions, dismemberment and killings. But, secondarily, never, in any of the books does Rowling actually touch on homosexuality. The books are done. Written, published, sold. She is not penning (to my knowledge) a gay love story of Dumbledore and his lost love. She used it in her mind for character development. So why all the outrage?
Conversely, the character of Dumbledore is a strong, good (slightly-flawed) leader. Bravo for being all that and gay too.
