Have you ever noticed that when a room in your home is in dire need of sprucing up (or in the case of the Punkinhouse, gutting) that you make less of an effort to actually keep it clean?
The vinyl flooring in the kitchen is hopelessly gouged, pitted and permanently stained. Every drawer has broken its tracks. The cabinets are an ugly dark blot with horribly tarnished cheap brass pulls. The back splash is atrocious pale blue bathroom tiles. The boring beige laminate counters are chipped and buckled. Two of the four burners on the stove no longer work. It is all I can do to summon the effort to sweep this room, let alone properly clean it.

And I thought I was the only one! My vinyl flooring had gone beyond torn and pitted to ripped and destroyed. Finally cut away most of the worst of it and put down nice, adhesive backed vinyl tiles (higher quality than the original) over at least a third of the kitchen. Suddenly I was more motivated to keep it clean -- at least for awhile.
We went with one missing burner for years, then the second went out and we put up with it for months. But finally the third one went out, leaving us with one tiny one in the back. Got a new stove top on order now!!
