I ought to have a ghost story for the pick of the week, since it's Halloween and all, but the best I can do is a murderer. My pick of the week is Erik Larson's Thunderstruck which interweaves the stories of two unlikely bookmates: Guglielmo Marconi and Hawley Harvey Crippen. Thunderstruck tells the tale of Dr. Crippen's evasion of the law and Marconi's struggle to invent radio telegraphy. One failed and the other succeeded spectacularly, but both were touch and go for some time. Dr. Crippen is the first criminal whose capture is directly attributable to Marconi's wireless. Were it not for one, the other might have led a very different life.
There are no ghosts, or ghouls or even jack-o-lanterns. I recommend you read it anyway.
