"What I am seeing reminds me too much of another destructive period in American history. Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are sowing the seeds of hatred and division, and there is no need for this hostility in our political discourse," ~Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.)
Lewis' statement follows a week of rabble-rousing (especially by Gov. Palin) that --at least from the news video-- seemed to encourage the pitchforks-and-torches mentality of the crowds at GOP campaign events and the fear-mongering ads misleading the electorate to believe that Barak Obama is some sort of 5th columnist. Senator McCain was horrified by the fact that Lewis compared the current political climate to that of George Wallace's segregationist Alabama in the 1960s. It appeared to me, at those Palin campaign rallies, quite similar, if a bit more "folksy."
He pointed out that his "statement was a reminder to all Americans that toxic language can lead to destructive behavior,"
Oct 17: Adding Keith Olbermann's devastating rant.
