I polished off five books this week. I'm currently stuck in number six and it looks to be a while. Of the five, though, I must select a favorite. It doesn't seem fair, because this week I really stuck to the old stand-bys. I did try one new author, and enjoyed her, but no one can beat good old Sherlock. So this week's pick is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's collection of Holmes stories after Reichenbach Fall.
Doyle, at one point in time lamented the difficulities in coming up with unique cases for Holmes to solve. I, for one, am grateful he made the effort. There is something so infinitely appealing about the ascetic grey-eyed misogynistic bachelor who writes monographs on esoterica and can identify 140 different types of tobacco based on their ashes and inspires the loyalty of hundreds of ragamuffin street urchins and one retired Army surgeon.
