Just wondering

With all the talk of tea parties recently, I was wondering why tea never really caught on here in the States. We were once part of the greatest tea-consuming nation in the world. I think the British are more famous for tea drinking than even the Chinese. Why, then, did the colonies not embrace tea? Was it really the tariffs?
