It was a light week (In my defense, I did paint the dining room!) with only four books returned to the library. My favorite was a non-fiction offering called The Time Traveler's Guide to Medieval England by Ian Mortimer.
Mortimer is almost gleeful in his myth-busting of our white-washed images of chivalrous knights and damsels in distress. At the same time, he humanizes what, to our limited imaginations, was an unspeakably dangerous and relatively disgusting time period.
The book reads like a travelogue discussing what a visitor might expect on his or her trip to Medieval England. Foods, customs, accommodations, culture, manners and behavior are covered.
And just to draw you in, the book begins with sewage.
