On this day in 1923, the only U.S. President to be born on the 4th of July was sworn into office by his father, a notary public, following the death of Warren G. Harding.
Calvin Coolidge was one of the most hands-off presidents our country has ever had. He was also famously close-mouthed, earning him the nickname "Silent Cal."
My favorite story about Calvin Coolidge is possibly invented, but nonetheless archtypical. Humorist and writer Dorothy Parker, seated next to Coolidge at a dinner, said to him, "Mr. Coolidge, I've made a bet against a fellow who said it was impossible to get more than two words out of you." His reply: "You lose."
