So FINALLY the blowhard old white men in the Senate have passed the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell. That law was insulting and ridiculous.
Now the press is reporting the hand-wringing over the implementation of the repeal. As if suddenly, thousands of troops will throw down their guns and start singing show tunes.
The AP reports, "In the years since the ban went into effect, views in the wider society have evolved. [...] Opinion surveys say a majority of Americans think it's OK for gays to serve in uniform." Straight guys think it's okay to drink from the same drinking fountains as gay guys. Straight women will allow lesbian women to sit near their children on public transportation. (I know it doesn't say that, but it may as well.) Jeeez.
I can't believe no one at the supposedly journalistic Associated Press bothered to do any research. They announce that "big questions lie ahead about how and when the change will take place, how troops will accept it and whether it will hamper the U.S. military effort in Afghanistan and Iraq" without following up with the information that the NATO-led coalition in Afghanistan already includes openly gay soldiers and has for the entire war.
The repeal of DADT was a major step in civil rights for gays and lesbians. If only the ignorance surrounding the issue of sexual orientation were also repealed.
