We just spent the majority of the long weekend (plus an extra vacation day) working in the garden. Specifically, spreading 4 cubic yards of mulch. That's 108 cubic feet. I am heartily tired of mulch, but the yard looks great. I had no idea how well mulch works to keep your flower beds weed free and retaining water (it's a GOOD thing when plants retain water) until one year we got a late start and by the time we were going to mulch most of the plants were up, so we said, "Screwit." and didn't mulch.
Now when I'm carefully working the mulch between plants and cursing my back, the heat, the sun, the mulch itself, and everything else in a 10 foot radius, I think that at least I won't be pulling weeds in July. Small consolation.
