Reality TV

In a land that is almost entirely coastline, dominated by stunningly beautiful fjords, it's little wonder that one of the most common vacations is a fjord cruise. The most popular in Norway is called Hurtigruten.
The Norwegian Broadcasting network recently decided to provide that cruise to its viewers. Granted, Norwegian television is not known for innovation. The programs they offer are frequently dull, old, and/or unintelligible. But when the network mounted 11 cameras on the MS Nord-Norge to stream live video and audio of the latest Hurtigruten cruise, the six day journey received over two and a half million viewers on the weekend as the ship took in the midnight sun in the Arctic Circle. 2.5 million Norwegians is more than half the country.
I don't know what it says about Norwegian sensibilities that so many people took a bit of a virtual cruise over the weekend --a very slow, real-time, no edits, no audio track-- cruise.

In the U.S. we'd have to have Snooki as your cruise director.
