On this day in 1776, (well, technically it was yesterday, but the formal announcement was the 4th) we declared ourselves a Nation. The interesting thing about this to me is, if it weren't for any number of fateful circumstances falling our way, this day might very well have become a footnote in British history:
On July 4th 1776 a small number of traitors attempted to stage a
rebellion against King George III.
We don't celebrate the
winning of the war, the signing of the
treaty, or the ratification of our
Constitution. We celebrate the day we had the audacity to tell England to pound dirt.
