Sexism is one of those things, like racism, that's amorphous. If you say something offensive about a black person (or people) in reference to their race, no matter how obscure that reference might be, it is racism. If you imply something offensive about women, for example, "women who have sex with men other than a lawfully-wedded husband should not be able to make their own medical decisions without government interference," then you are a sexist.
Back in the 80s, when Reagan was shot, some people thought, "hey, maybe we shouldn't let crazy people buy guns." which led to the Brady Bill that is still lamented (even in its watered-down form) by all 2nd Amendment purists. (It's a slippery slope, they argue. Once you put any controls on the right to bear arms, you are inevitably headed toward eliminating the right completely.)
Yet, those very same old, white men (and they are overwhelmingly OLD and WHITE and MALE) think I'm being hysterical (in the old sense of the word) when I suggest that Virginia's proposed law forcing an internal ultrasound on any woman seeking an abortion, which I need to remind you is a LEGAL MEDICAL PROCEDURE whether you agree with it ethically or not, might lead to demanding the same for a teenager looking to get a prescription for birth-control pills.
If they can argue that keeping AK-47s away from crazy people will infringe on their right to take a shotgun to Bambi, then I can argue that their intrusive and offensive "deterrent" to women prancing around getting abortions willly nilly (who are these women, anyway!?) is a direct attack on my right to privacy for any LEGAL medical procedure I might need or want.
A lot has been said on this issue from the rabidly conservative and the rabidly liberal. The truly odd thing to me is that for the rabidly conservative, the usual mantra is "keep government out of our lives!" Apparently that does not apply to sexually active women.
