I have a tiny pond in my backyard. It almost could be called a big puddle. Usually in the winter it freezes solid. Springtime involves me, in rubber clogs, in ice cold mucky water, scooping the half-decayed leaves and other primordial ooze (including fish carcasses) out of the meltwater and then making a quick trip to the pet store for a half-dozen feeder goldfish at 12¢ each.
This winter's mild temperatures contributed to the very alive goldfish in the pond right now. I'm not entirely sure what contributed to his (her?) 4+ inches in size, since last April he was about a half inch long and lucky to not be in a snapping turtle tank as a between-meal snack.
Perhaps his size explains the missing five goldfish.
