As you may have noticed, weekends away have a deleterious effect on Friday Book Blogs. However, they greatly improve the disposition of the blogger.
We spent a long weekend in the sadly rundown town of Nelsonville, Ohio, home (as they like to point out) of the famous Star Brick, which is not a drag queen's name, but an actual decorative brick that was manufactured in the area.
Also of interest is the Hocking Valley Railroad which takes tourists up and down the tracks for a couple of hours each Saturday and for special occasions. The historic town square has arts and crafts galleries, a little coffee shop in the old Dew Hotel and the Stuart Opera House. The 1880s Bed and Breakfast we stayed at, the Mead House, is just two blocks from the square.
This was certainly not a very exciting vacation, however, it was (despite the stifling heat) relaxing and quirky. We shopped at the local artist coop (and bought a magnet and postcard). We ate dinner at the local college's culinary school's restaurant. We took the train ride. We wandered the campus of nearby Ohio University. We had the best fried chicken ever. We had drinks with an old friend at Tony's in Athens which hasn't changed at all in 20 years. We sweated. A lot.
Next time we go, it'll be cooler.
