This week's Friday Book Blog is a bit different. I spent three and a half days reading one book that was the paperback equivalent of a cheesy horror movie. It started out promisingly, and by page 40 I was completely sucked in.
At page 170, I was still enjoying the story, but just 30 pages later, a disturbing neo-gothic ghost theme was becoming prominent. Of course, by this time I'm half-way through the damn thing so I'm invested. By page 315, the entire story was playing in my head as a scary movie in the poltergeist genre.
Between the poorly-written violent sex and the ridiculously over-the-top beatings that fail to kill any of the main characters, by the end of the book it had become a joke that I actually enjoyed provided I actively suppressed my clichéd bullshit monitor.
At any rate, I certainly can't recommend Brenda Joyce's House of Dreams, but if you are looking for a laugh and are willing to plow through 400+ tightly written pages... . Nah. Even then I wouldn't recommend it.
