We all remember 9/11. Just in case you were in danger of forgetting, Congress was nice enough to pass a bill renaming it "Patriots Day" because, apparently, large-scale terrorist attacks make Congress think of patriots. That aside, I was worming around in history-land yesterday, and discovered that the horrific events of 2001 and the death of nearly 3000 people are dwarfed by another bombing on the same day 57 years prior.
During World War II, the Royal Air Force firebombed the city of Darmstadt, Germany. Not only did the bombing destroy the city center, but it killed between 11,000 and 12,500 civilians.
