There was a surprise come-from-behind winner this week. I began reading Ian Rankin's Knots and Crosses without knowing much about the series it begins. The first 70 pages were okay, but didn't grab me and I thoroughly disliked main character John Rebus. Then, over the hump, the last 100 pages flew. I stayed up too late just to finish it. Well done!
I'm not sure this qualifies as a police procedural, since procedure is not followed, but John Rebus is a Detective Sergent in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is a bit disconcerting that the plot feels fresh and present-day, but has minor anachronisms which are just jarring enough to stand out. At the beginning I had to keep reminding myself that the book is actually 25 years old. Still, the story is truly character-driven and the characters are robustly complex.
