Christmas in June

On this day in 1870, the Christian holiday of Christmas is declared a federal holiday in the United States.
 1870! Almost 100 years after the Declaration of Independence and 83 years after the Constitution.

So much for that "our founding fathers were deeply religious" theory.
Ironically, the declaration was signed into law by a president who was responsible hundreds of thousands of deaths on the battlefield and was neither baptized nor was an official member of any church.
