I'm special

We brought this upon ourselves.
All the crap we've been feeding kids for the last 10-20 years is coming back to bite us all. The "self esteem movement" was just getting its legs when I was in school. Back then, when you played a game, there were still losers. The kids who couldn't read weren't called "special"; they were "remedial." You didn't get gold stars unless you earned them.
After so many gold stars and "you're special"s (no matter how stupid the kid) he believes it. These kids grow up thinking they are superior. Despite their mediocrity.
Now we have a country full of narcissists.
The study asserts that narcissists "are more likely to have romantic relationships that are short-lived, at risk for infidelity, lack emotional warmth, and to exhibit game-playing, dishonesty, and over-controlling and violent behaviors." [...] [N]arcissists tend to lack empathy, react aggressively to criticism and favor self-promotion over helping others.

The linked and quoted study here does point out that narcissim is good for meeting new people and auditioning for American Idol. It's chilling to know that we, as a nation, have put a relatively pathetic singing contest on a higher level of importance than empathy and honesty.
