There is a legend about some tribes dating back to the turn of the last century that they held the belief that a photograph would steal your soul. Despite the ignorance behind that misapprehension, the photographs of E. J. Bellocq really did seem to at least borrow, if not steal, the souls of the prostitutes who plied their trade in early 1900's New Orleans.
