Some one needs to explain to the Newbie (Robert Gates) in the administration that "closing Guantanamo" to the activists who are lobbying for such does not mean finding a way to lock them up forever somewhere else. In fact, I'd be willing to argue that the actual location is immaterial to those of us who are disgusted by the Guantanamo detention facility.
Perhaps if we speak slowly and enunciate each word, Mr. Gates will be able to comprehend that it is the fact that we are holding these men (our fellow human beings) without access to attorneys, without knowledge of any charges against them, indeed in some cases, without charges at all. For years. It would be just as offensive to me if it were in Oahu or Omaha.
He apparently thinks he's being magnanimous by telling Congress to find a way to close Guantanamo provided we can still keep the men there incarcerated for life somewhere else. He just doesn't get it. Some of those me may be innocent. And we may never know.
