As much as I would like to start the new year with a lovely, profound, 5-star book (and 5-star review of said book), it's not gonna happen. I did read a lovely and potentially-profound book, The Beggar King and the Secret of Happiness by Joel ben Izzy, but (in reflection of the fact that I'm neither lovely nor profound) it was not my favorite.
My favorite was the third in a series by author Peter May who has been honored with my book of the week selection in the past. May's "Enzo Files" feature a semi-retired Scotch-Italian forensic scientist living in France. His goal is to solve France's most notorious "cold cases." In Blacklight Blue, he comes up against someone who would prefer they remain unsolved.
While the action is a bit outlandish at times (a la Steve Berry/Dale Brown thrillers), the characters are intricately and compassionately drawn, and the story twists like a mountain road.

Hey, this is the internet: you want to be lovely and profound, you're lovely and profound. You can throw in omniscient, saintly, and callipygian, too, if you want. We'll take your word for it.
I've always wanted to be callipygian. Now I am!
