Friday Book Blogging

Due to the fact that we held a big party here at the Punkinhouse last weekend and I spent all my free time from last Thursday until the following Monday on party details, I managed only three books. My favorite of the lot was Ruth Rendell's Adam and Eve and Pinch Me. Rendell is a mystery author, and this book, like her others was shelved with the mysteries at the library.
However, there is nothing mysterious about it. There is never any doubt as to the identity of the murderer. So don't think of it as a murder mystery, and instead enjoy it for what it is: a twisted, quirky, melancholy tale of naivete and mental illness hitting headlong into the wall of modern life.
The characters, though sketchily drawn, resonate. Minty with her OCD, Jock with his horrible jokes (hence the title of the book), Fiona and her misplaced loyalty, all the personalities are what move the story. And you can almost hear them at the end of the book telling the reporter that they are "shocked" that the neighbor/co-worker was a murderer.
