Saint Paddy

I know Wikipedia is not always accurate, but here they nailed it:
"It is believed that Saint Patrick's Day has been celebrated in Ireland since before the 1600s. It was also believed to have served as a one-day break during Lent, the forty day period of fasting. This would involve drinking alcohol; something which became a tradition."

I believe that to probably be true.

My husband and I took a bus tour around the ring of kerry in Ireland. At one point the tour stops in a town where we are parked in a street that has a church on a corner and across from it a bar. It is about between 9 and 10 am and all of the people who are coming out of the church are direct lining to the bar. Our driver said that is a traditional Sunday in Ireland. lol
