This was only a five book week, the clear winner of which was Martha Grimes' newest Richard Jury investigation, The Black Cat.
One of the best-written investigators in current fiction, Superintendent Jury holds just enough humanity to the pages of each Grimes novel to be real, and just enough superior insight to be a touch above the mortal reader. And Grimes, in creating such a compelling character, can take her mysteries to limits that are anathema to most modern formulaic stories. Yes, Jury "gets his man," but not without large bumps in the emotional road.
The Black Cat is both enormously satisfying and leaves the reader hungry for more.
