Actually the killing part of the war was much shorter. The armistice that ended actual warfare was signed on 11/11/18 and the declaration of war was a full month after the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. While we may not have sacrificed on the homefront for this war, the soldiers have also been astonishingly lucky. The death toll in WWI was staggering with over 17 MILLION soldiers killed or missing and 21 million wounded. If we saw those kind of casualties, you can bet the government would wrap it up as quickly as possible.
