I'm sorry to tell you that this week was a pitiful one. I read four books, none of which impressed me in the slightest. The best of a sorry bunch was Alexander McCall Smith's Portuguese Irregular Verbs.
This is a grown-up Amelia Bedelia novel whose main character, Professor Dr. von Igelfeld, is so completely unself-aware that what is meant to be funny by the author becomes painful by the third chapter of this skinny tome. In fact the length of the novel is its saving grace.
