Today, in addition to being Mardi Gras (see objectification of women, previous post) ironically it is also International Women's Day. (Who knew we had a day? A whole DAY! Don't spend it all in one place.)
Wiki says that International Women's Day has been around since 1911 (Happy 100th birthday, International Women's Day!) Probably the reason we aren't too familiar with it here in the U.S. is because it was originally a *gasp* Socialist holiday. "IWD was marked by over a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, on March 19, [1911]. In the West, International Women's Day was first observed as a popular event after 1977 when the united Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8 as the UN Day for Women's Rights and International Peace.
It's a nice sentiment.
