And adorable statues

Back in 1858, a policeman is laid to rest in a cemetery in Edinburgh. Every day for 14 years, his faithful dog watches over his grave. People come from miles away to see "Greyfriars Bobby" and one wealthy woman is so touched, she has a statue erected in his honor. Years later, books and movies chronicle the furry companion's fidelity.

Best part of the whole story: it's all made up. "[T]he 140-year-old Victorian tale was created by cemetery curator, James Brown, and restaurant owner, John Traill, as a business ploy to draw in customers."

There was a dog --likely more than one-- and he did stay at the cemetery. Beyond that... all a hoax. But it appears to have worked marvelously at drumming up business.
