Instant book

We'll do a mid-week book post because I was musing on how the "instant book" machine will impact libraries. I had this concern when eReaders came flooding onto the market too. For too many of us, a little LCD screen can't replace a bunch of pages bound between two covers. And the lending possibilities on a Kindle are pretty limited.
The appealing thing about the Espresso Book Machine (and any future copycats) is that it can potentially save a LOT of paper and publishing costs. You are, after all, only printing on demand. This also means that once it's in a database, no book is ever "out of print."
Ultimately, though, neither one of these new technologies can diminish the importance of a library.
