Mitt Romney has said, "America has a long history of heckling and free speech." in order to justify his campaign's efforts in disrupting the president's events. I searched the Internet for hours last night and could find no indication that political heckling has a long history. Unless your version of long history is your own lifetime.
Heckling has existed (even as a word) since around 1825 but at that time applied to the type of heckling Statler and Waldorf did to poor Kermit and Fozzie Bear. Political heckling, as far as I can tell, specifically directed at candidates for office, seems to date to the early 1960s, within Mitt's lifetime.
It does begin to seem like there are things the President might say that Romney wants to be sure that no one hears.
