The senseless tragedy in Aurora, Colorado, last Friday was many things. A horrible loss to family and friends. A reminder of what a wacko with a gun (or four) can do. A chance for politicians to appear sympathetic. An opportunity for activists to demand new regulations. A moment to reflect on our propensity for violence. A gift of gratitude for those who survived. A time to remember all our loved ones.
It does not, however, justify four days of National Mourning. If the flags are at half-staff today when I go to work, I will be pissed. 12 people tragically shot to death by a delusional 29-year-old Batman fan, does not amount to a national tragedy under any definition. By raising it to that level, it belittles the real national tragedies that deserve the respect of a flag at half-staff commands.
