For those of us who are well-endowed, the brassiere is a necessary evil. Now the history of this helpful and uncomfortable garment is being rewritten with the discovery of two bras (or remnants of bras) dating to the 1400s! Of course they don't have elastic or the Wonderbra's padding, but they are distinctly brassieres.
Obviously, they were not overly popular since the corset ruled fashion until the early 20th century and present-day Renaissance Fayres. (A pretty long run for an undergarment!)
