God-given talent

I was very upset that the Democrats re-voted on a platform plank that added "God-given" (in reference to human potential) to the originally approved statement, "We need a government that stands up for the hopes, values, and interests of working people, and gives everyone willing to work hard the chance to make the most of their potential."
I don't have anything against God (or god), per se. But the fact that this is a specifically political document, completely secular in nature, and the fact that religion is a very personal thing, justify leaving out any reference to a mythical creator.
Frankly, it wouldn't have bothered me if they had voted it in with the "God-given" in the first place, but the fact that they ADDED it back after the jeering Republicans pointed out its absence is what really rankles. Why didn't Villaraigosa just stand up there and say, "My religious beliefs and faith are between me and my God. It is not the purpose, nor the responsibility of the Democratic party to establish or endorse a religion."?
