Stupid is as stupid does

When this nation was founded, (by the venerated Founding Fathers --with capital letters) the idea that someday in the future ALL citizens (male or female; black or white or any other color; rich or poor) over the age of 17 can vote, would have horrified them.
Even Thomas Jefferson thought only white males should vote and he was considered quite the populist in his day. (Those nasty Federalists persisted in their insistence on property ownership before a white male could cast a vote.)
At the time the restrictions were seen as a regulator on the quality of the electorate, the assumption being that if a white male was savvy enough to gain his own property, he would be intelligent enough to understand the political issues.
Now, due to nearly universal suffrage, the lack of intelligence of the voters is dwarfed only by some of the people they elect. Climate change is real. Rapesperm-repelling uteri are not. Increased government spending leads directly to lower unemployment. Evolution is real. Homosexuality is not an illness. Yet each and every one of these factual statements is doubted or denied by at least one member of the U.S. Congress.
If these guys (and gals) are this stupid about something as basic as 9th grade science, think of how stupid they are with the complicated stuff. Like budgets.
To pretend that governance is simple or that anyone can do it, is every bit as absurd as it would be to look for surgeons in bars.
If we want competent government, we need to look for political candidates who demonstrate that they have the required intellect.
