"The surface level of the Dead Sea — the saltiest water in the world at the lowest point on Earth that is estimated at 1,200 feet below sea level — has fallen about three feet a year in the past 20 years because of evaporation and allegedly the diversion of rivers by Syria and Israel."
To correct this staggaring drop, a coalition of nations are spending a few million on a study on the feasiblity of digging a canal from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea to replenish it. If the canal gets a thumbs up, it's another $1 billion. But to save such a unique body of water, it may well be worth it.

Feeding the Red Sea via the Dead Sea - it almost gives it a feel of irony, doesn't it?
All the more ironic because the Jordan River used to replenish the Dead Sea until it was all siphoned off for irrigation. I guess there's a difference between freshwater and saltwater.
