My favorite line from the story about McDain's Restaurant in Monroeville, Pennsylvania decision to ban children under age six: "[Restaurant owner] Mike Vuick believes that although kids may be at the center of their parents' universe, they aren't at the center of everyone else's too."
The odd thing to me is all the manufactured outrage at this new "no children under 6" rule that the restaurant has initiated. There are places that cater to family dining. If you want to eat at a restaurant that is more upscale, leave the toddlers at home.
I have had a few meals disturbed by unruly kids. While I accept that it's part of dining out in places like Friendly's or anywhere that has a "kids' menu," when I'm spending in the neighborhood of $100.00 on dinner for two, I want to be assured that little Johnny's temper tantrum at the lack of fries on the menu will not ruin my night. Which takes us back to the opening quote, distilled, "I don't care about your kids nearly as much as you think I should."

I thought that this was quite appropriate also, and I like your phrase "Manufactured outrage", because I think most adults think this way also. If you can't control your child, don't take him out in public to harass others.
