Since it is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, I feel today's post ought to have something to do with racism. Unfortunately, since I grew up in a remarkably insular suburban community and graduated high school being exposed to exactly two African-American people, (Our high school also boasted at least seven Asian-Americans and possibly a Jew!) I have absolutely no authority to speak on the subject.
I can say that I'm fairly certain it still exists and was not eradicated with the election of our first black president, despite what the pundits over at Fox News avow.
I can also say that the urge to cross the street when I see a group of teenagers with sagging pants and backwards baseball caps has nothing to do with the color of their skin but with the perceived content of their characters. I wonder if that is what MLK, Jr had in mind when he declared that famous line.
